Explanation Of The Hadeeth: “No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach…”

“No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Aadam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.” [Ahmad, At-Tirmidhee, An-Nasaa'ee, Ibn Maajah - hadeeth saheeh.]

Excerpted from Umm Abdillah’s book “My Advice to the Women”

  1. The proper hijab: [jilbaab:not bright colors, not tight clothes, no 'bling'] –> see HERE
  2. Her refraining from applying perfume
  3. The moderation of her pace such that the sounds of her shoes are not heard [Surah Nur 24:31]
  4. If she is walking with a female companion in the presence of men, then she should not talk to ther companion. This does not mean that the voice of the woman is from her private part (’Awrah) which cannot be revealed; but rather the mean’s hearing of the woman’s voice could lead to temptation.
  5. That she seeks the permission of her husband (before leaving) if she is married
  6. If the distance she intends to go is considered traveling, then she should not leave except with a lawful-relative (mahram)
  7. That she does not mix with men
  8. That she observes modesty
  9. That she lowers her gaze
  10. That she does not remove her garments in other than her own home if she intended by this uncovering herself. For indeed it has come to us that the Prophet, salla’Allahu alaihi wa salam said:

“Any woman who removes her clothing in other than the home of her husband has indeed removed the covering which had been between her and her Lord.” [Saheeh]

It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basoften used to say,

“O youth! Seek the hereafter, for we often see people pursuing the hereafter and finding it as well as the dunyâ (worldly wellbeing), but we have never seen anyone pursue the dunyâ and gain the hereafter as well as the dunyâ.”

Al-Bayhaqî, Al-Zuhd Al-Kabîr, article 12.

While many of us are cold, complaining of the weather, our past predecessors (salaf: first three generations) rejoiced at the coming of this season….Why?

winter“The best season to a believer is the winter, its nights are long for those who wish to pray, and its days are short for those who wish to fast” Al Hasan Al Basri.

It is reported from ‘Ubayd bin ‘Umayr – Allah have mercy on him – that he said:

It used to be said when winter came: O people of the Qur`an, the night has become long so you can pray (more) and the day has become short for you to fast.

 Abu Nu’aym, Hilyah Al-Awliyaa`.

It is reported from the famous worshipper Rabi’ah – Allah have mercy on her – that she said:

I have never heard the adhan except that I remember the caller who will announce the Day of Resurrection, and I never see the falling snow except that I imagine the flying pages of the records of peoples deeds (on that day), and I never see swarms of locusts except that I think about the Great Gathering on the Last Day.

Verses Recited [ Surat Al-Qiyamah (75):26-34]

  • Nay, when (the soul) reaches to the collar bone (i.e. up to the throat in its exit),
  • And it will be said: “Who can cure him and save him from death?”
  • And he (the dying person) will conclude that it was (the time) of departing (death);
  • And leg will be joined with another leg (shrouded)
  • The drive will be, on that Day, to your Lord (Allâh)!
  • So he (the disbeliever) neither believed (in this Qur’ân, in the Message of Muhammad SAW) nor prayed!
  • But on the contrary, he belied (this Qur’ân and the Message of Muhammad SAW) and turned away!
  • Then he walked in full pride to his family admiring himself!
  • Woe to you [O man (disbeliever)]! And then (again) woe to you!

Muhammad ibn al Husayn ibn al Fadl al Qattaan narrated…that Miskeen ibn Bukayr stated:

A man passed by al ‘Amash while he was teaching Hadeeth and said: ‘You are teaching these children?!’

Al ‘Amash responded: ‘These children are preserving your religion for you!

Al Hasan ibn Abee Taalib informed me that…I heard al Musayyib ibn Waadi’ saying: ‘Ibn Mubaarak may Allaah have mercy upon him, if he saw the children of the people of Hadeeth with pens in their hands he would draw them close and say: ‘These are the seedlings of the religion, we were that the Messenger of Allaah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – said:

Allaah continues to plant seedlings in this religion that He supports it with, they are youngsters amongst you today, but they may be the Kibaar [major scholars or elders] after you.’
